Perkins + Will Design The World's Tallest Wooden Skyscraper For Vancouver

Perkins + Will have revealed a new design for the world's tallest wooden skyscraper in Vancouver. Called Canada Earth Tower, the mass timber project is designed along the city's Central Broadway corridor. Bruce Langereis, president of Delta Land Development, unveiled the company’s proposal to transform a 1.3-acre lot at 1745 West 8th Avenue with a project that could rise up to 40 floors. Canada Earth Tower aims to become a new precedent and benchmark for green building construction. [ArchDaily]

See The Bright, Spacious Habitat That Martian Colonizers Could Call Home

Living on another planet is going to be really hard. No readily available food, water, or breathing air. Extreme cold and extreme hot. No atmosphere or magnetic field to protect from the sun's radiation (or meteorites). The buildings that colonizers live in will be incredibly important–they'll need to keep inhabitants safe from all of the above. That's why NASA is asking private companies to come up with ways to build these homes through its 3D-Printed Habitat Challenge, a competition to design habitats and laboratories for deep space exploration. Studio Bark's Flat-Pack U-Build System Lets Anyone Self-Build

Studio Bark's Flat-Pack U-Build System Lets Anyone Self-Build

U-Build is a simple modular construction system designed by Studio Bark, which encourages individuals and communities to self-build. The system relies solely on a flat-pack kit made from timber parts, and is born from Studio Bark's desire to make construction "truly affordable" for the public. Components can be quickly slotted together like puzzle pieces to assemble a building frame, and easily dismantled, recycled or reused at the end of the building's life. [Dezeen]

The Urban Planning Vision Of Leonardo Da Vinci

The Urban Planning Vision Of Leonardo Da Vinci

The word “genius” is universally associated with the name of Leonardo da Vinci. A true Renaissance man, he embodied scientific spirit, artistic talent, and humanist sensibilities. Exactly 500 years have passed since Leonardo died in his home at Château du Clos Lucé, outside Tours, France. Yet far from fading to insignificance, his thinking has carried down the centuries, and still surprises today. [CityLab]

Design Your Dream Home With A New Platform That Spits Out Accurate Blueprints

Design Your Dream Home With A New Platform That Spits Out Accurate Blueprints

n a customization-obsessed era, consumers have more access than ever to products that can be tailored to their specific needs. But when it comes to creating a dream house, customization still carries a prohibitively high price tag. New home design software called Higharc aims to change that, by offering consumers a new, cost-effective way to avoid a cookie-cutter house. What sets this still-under-development home design program apart is its ease of use for consumers—the web app allows users to simply drag and drop rooms and select options from a drop-down menu—and its usefulness to builders and contractors. Amazon’s Selling A Guesthouse 'Kit' That You Can Build In Your Backyard In 8 Hours

Some of the more experienced DIY-ers have been talking about this project for a while, creating a huge buzz about it online. And if you like to build things as well, it might be right up your… backyard. This 'garden house' by Allwood can be converted into a guesthouse, studio, garden house, pool house, or truly anything your heart desires and it shouldn’t be harder to assemble than your typical IKEA purchase. "[The] Solvalla garden house kit is made from high quality solid Nordic wood," the company writes on its website. "This timeless design is an alternative to classic log cabin styled structures. It works well in a variety of surroundings and can be a guesthouse, home office, granny flat, or even a retail space." [Bored Panda]

Construction To Kick Off On World's First 3D-Printed Neighborhood

Construction To Kick Off On World's First 3D-Printed Neighborhood

A noble plan to improve housing access for those in need through cutting-edge construction technology is gathering momentum, with a blueprint now in place for what is billed as the world's first 3D-printed community. Set to take shape in Latin America, the cluster of homes is designed for families living on less than US$200 a month, and will ideally serve as proof of concept for low-cost housing solutions around the world. The project is a joint initiative from non-profit New Story, Yves Béhar's design firm Fuseproject and construction technology company Icon to provide housing solutions for the homeless. [New Atlas]

Green Architect Proposes Towering Glass Spire For Reconstruction O Notre-Dame

Green Architect Proposes Towering Glass Spire For Reconstruction O Notre-Dame

Renowned green architect Vincent Callebaut has published his concept for the reconstruction of Notre-Dame Cathedral. Callebaut is proposing a glass roof—a popular choice among architects—with a timber frame that gently slopes up to form the spire. Titled Palingenesis, which means rebirth, Callebaut’s Notre-Dame concept aims to unite spirituality, art, and science. Callebaut has carefully considered the key parts of the cathedral’s Gothic architecture—nave, transepts, flying buttresses—and put them together in one clean line that sweeps toward the skies. In his proposed design, the original form of the attic is respected, but given new life. [My Modern Met]
